"Chicago" Joe Angio and his wife Anna did everything by the book to secure their slice of the American Dream. They earned college degrees, started a small business, bought a house and pair of cars, paid their taxes and credit-card bills on time. But when the economy tanked, so did the dream.

Although Slabbers tend to defy easy characterization, de facto neighborhoods ("Poverty Flats," "Lows") and tribes have emerged. There are Year-Rounders who brave the 120°F summer inferno, and Snowbirds who land from as far as Canada with their souped-up RVs and pensions, soul-searching Gypsy Kids who arrive by train with little more than the ragged clothes on their back, Spaz Kids and their electro-psychedelic outdoor parties, and Scrappers who risk life and limb to collect shrapnel from the gunnery range that flanks the camp,

Damn hippie communes!

I oughta stop by, but it's really too far a drive. I live in a tiny burg and it's cheap living here.

I've been out there a few times. If you can live simply it's not too bad.

Salvation Mountain is out there too.

That's a whole "nother" story -- I need to get back out there and get some pictures.

Around here, someone might be tagged for a zoning violation for Slab City.

Salvation Mountain appears to be a relic of the cliff dwelling era.

On further thought, I could dig living in one of those bomb shelter deals as long as the prairie dogs left me alone. Maybe it's the dingoes I need to worry about. I just don't know. Do they hold up against artillery? There are crazy people out there, according to what I've heard. Desert people. What about those giant earthworms? You ever see that movie about them?

I did some checking and Salvation Mountain is thought to have been inhabited by the colorful predecessors of the Peyote or Hippie Indians. You might check with the Park Service.
