Two ingredients in marijuana have opposite effects on certain regions of the brain, according to a new study.
One chemical, called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), increases the brain processes that can lead to symptoms of psychosis, while another compound, called cannabidiol, may negate such symptoms, according to the study.

the findings are the first to use images of the brain to demonstrate that the reason symptoms of psychosis arise in marijuana users may be because THC interferes with the brain's ability to distinguish between stimuli that are important, and those that aren't, according to the study.

So it wacks you out but it doesn't wack you out. hehehe
The brain is a fascinating thing and we are just learning all about this gray matter computer filled with chemical reactions.
I will test tisi test on myself over and over to see if they are correct. I wll give my mind and my sanity to science if need be!
Now, does anyone have an MRI machine handy?

LOL -- I'm not so sure about the "doesn't wack you out" part. Keep up the experiments.

Oh. Well. Then, this explains a little...but I cannot remember what it is. Oh yeah, I got it. Um...it's all good.

I just finished reading Before The Dawn by Nicholas Wade and he ties a lot of the genome project into looking at early man. It seems we are still evolving and we are losing a genetic part that helped us flush out poisons from plants and that maybe some of the reason for so much fluctuation of drug reactions in people.
This could also be why there is a rise in allergys in things like peanuts. I really like reading more about our brain, it is still the unkonwn universe.

"By contrast, there was no difference in psychotic symptoms seen between taking cannabidiol and a placebo."
Perhaps if you are psychotic you should just haul off and avoid mind altering substances in general. Just a thought.
I've known a couple of deranged piffle smokers in my day but I get the feeling that Viet Nam was more of a factor than the Holy Plant.

Exactly. Marijuana can cause psychosis - in people who are already predisposed to it or who are taking other drugs at the time. Of course, so can plenty of other things - like pharmaceuticals, which can cause psychosis and psychotic symptoms in people who have never experienced them in their lives, as they did with me. And people, predisposed to psychosis/psychotic symptoms or not, are far more likely to experience these symptoms with pharmaceuticals than with marijuana. But that information is hushed up because we can't interfere with Big Pharma - there's profit to be had!

Agreed.
You know, I had a Cup of Joe in the Specific North West once that, had I been prone to psychotic episodes, might just have slud me right off the supper plate.

Tex - It just illustrates that people can react to anything, natural or not. I've found that caffeine makes me extremely nauseous (small potatoes compared to a psychotic episode, but when you're as terrified of vomiting as I am, it's a big deal), so I avoid it as a result. Caffeine is known to cause nausea - in huge amounts. But even small amounts do it to me.
I also almost killed myself after taking St. John's Wort (which, ironically, I took for depression!). If it hadn't entirely sapped my energy at the same time, I'm certain I would have gone through with it.
Moral of the story: You put it in your body, your reaction will be either positive, negative, or neutral. But you will react to it, one way or another.

I can't argue with any of that.
My observation through life has been that there are some folks that can do drugs and some folks that cannot. Folks in the latter group should, if possible, just eschew them.

This study did not study the effect of marijuana it studied the effect of THC when given orally. A chemical they already know can cause psychosis -something caffeine, nicotine and alcohol can do as well.

No chance for me then -- send for the men in the white coats. ;-)
